Beyond teaching dance, the Guru imparts values, philosophy, and a way of life, while the Shishya learns with sincerity, dedication, and gratitude. A: At Pallavi Kathak Gurukul, examinations are viewed as milestones rather than competitions. Students are assessed on their technical understanding, rhythm, expression, repertoire, stage presence, and overall growth. Our curriculum follows the structured syllabus of Bharati Vidyapeeth University School of Performing Arts (Pune, India) allowing students to progress through graded examinations while developing a deep appreciation for Kathak and its rich traditions. Q: Who is Tai and what does she do?
A: “Tai” means “elder sister” in Marathi and is a term of deep affection and respect. Our Guru, Pallavi Tai Degwekar, is a Kathak exponent, choreographer, educator, and the Founder of Pallavi Kathak Gurukul and the Mahadeo Degwekar Foundation. She is deeply committed to preserving the Guru–Shishya (mentor-disciple tradition) while making Kathak accessible to students of all ages and backgrounds. Through her teaching, choreography, performances, and mentorship, Tai nurtures not only Kathak students but compassionate, disciplined, and culturally rooted individuals.
